Nicholas School of the Environment

Duke University’s School of the Environment sent an email with the words “beauty, creativity and climate science” asking us to lead them on a three-day retreat.

Frustrated by the fact that climate change is a serious threat that no one’s taking seriously, the school wanted to have a different kind of meeting to look at why the messaging around climate change isn’t having an impact.

Julie joined a small group of ecologists, neuroscientists and artists for a “creative mash-up”. She designed, facilitated and visually mapped the conversations, introducing all kinds of visual elements including a visual timeline of climate messaging, an Idea Wall and the participants own visual notes and doodles during the World Café dialogues.

A story about the retreat and its outcomes appeared in The New York Times.
